چکیده

A fast SPE-GC-ECD method for the analysis of PCBs in waste oil was developed. A complete profi le was obtained following SPE with a 12 minute GC run-time using a modular accelerated column heater (MACH). Full automation of the sample preparation and analysis (except sample weigh-in) enables a daily throughput of 100 samples. A wide range of concentrations can be determined using a dedicated column and Electron Capture Detection (ECD). INTRODUCTION The offi cial method for the analysis of PCBs in waste oil (DIN EN 61619) is time consuming and labor intensive (dilutions; extraction, column preparation and cleaning; manual solid phase extraction...) and it requires a long GC run (around 40 min). Speed of analysis in capillary GC can be increased by using fast and ultra-fast temperature programming. In general, peak resolution will be reduced when the temperature gradient is very fast, but for several applications, some loss of resolution can be accepted. Recently, direct resistive heating of the capillary column resulting in very fast heating rates (> 1800 °C/min) has been introduced [1]. The system available via GERSTEL under the name Modular Accelarated Column Heater (MACH, GERSTEL GmbH, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany) is mounted onto the door of a standard GC holding up to four modules containing separate capillary columns

Automated Clean-up of PCB extracts from Waste Oil using the Agilent 7696A Sample Prep WorkBench

Solid waste, including petroleum based waste oils, transformer oil or mineral oil are screened for the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The analysis is typically performed by GC-ECD or GC-MS after clean-up using column chromatography, solid phase extraction (SPE), or dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE). Clean-up on silica or acidified silica removes polar constituents that ca...

GC/MS Analysis of PCBs in Waste Oil Using the Backflush Capability of the Agilent QuickSwap Accessory Application

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in waste oil are typically analyzed by GC-ECD or GC/MS after solid phase extraction (SPE) cleanup. However, not all problematic matrix components are completely removed during cleanup and are injected into the analytical system, thereby contaminating the column and the detector. In this application, a practical example of backflushing is presented using the Agil...

Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) for the Calibration and Validation of Analytical Methods for PCBs (as Aroclor Mixtures)

Six Standard Reference Materials (SRMs®) have been prepared by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the determination of PCBs as different Aroclor mixtures in methanol. Six additional SRMs of the same Aroclors in transformer oil have also been prepared. Specifically, solutions of Aroclors 1016, 1232, 1242, 1254, and 1260 have been gravimetrically prepared (individually)...

Dechlorination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Real Waste Transformer Oil Using a Modified Household Microwave Oven in Presence of Sodium Hydroxide and Polyethylene Glycol

This research was carried out to assess the dechlorination and decomposition of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the real waste transformer oil using polyethylene glycol 1000/NaOH through a modified household microwave oven. To do so, the influence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) (1.5-7.5 g) and NaOH (0.3-1.5 g) under microwave (MW) power of 500 W on the dechlorination efficiency of PCBs, exist...
